WIC gives your patients the nutrition education they need
WIC clients receive more than just a food package. WIC has a strong focus on educating families about nutrition, parenting and breastfeeding. WIC appointments may include:
Nutrition Assessment
WIC will measure the height and weight and test the hematocrit or hemoglobin level of each applicant in their family. This helps staff to develop a “nutrition prescription” for a monthly food package that is tailored specifically for them. If your patient has special dietary requirements or cultural preferences, complete a formula prescription form for your patient to bring to the WIC office. A complete list of Texas WIC’s food packages can be found here.
Personalized Nutrition and Breastfeeding Counseling Sessions
Texas WIC is proud to have friendly experts in a variety of healthcare specialties. Your patients have the opportunity to meet with Registered Dietitians, International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, degreed nutritionists, nurses, and more as part of their regular WIC services. Over the years our staff has been involved in the health and wellness of millions of families. Some of our staff used to be participants, so this allows a more effective peer-to-peer approach.
Group Nutrition and Breastfeeding Support
WIC gives families the chance to get together and share tips about lots of health topics, such as nutrition during pregnancy, breastfeeding, starting your baby on solid foods, feeding your child, cooking classes with healthy recipes, physical activity, and tips for picky eaters, to name a few.
Other Resources
WIC can connect your patients to other resources they might need, such as breast pumps and referrals to other health services like immunizations and dental care. WIC is often able to help with additional referral needs like childcare, housing, transportation, and more and works as a team to refer clients to you as well!
