Helping moms meet their breastfeeding goals
The WIC program recommends exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months and continued breastfeeding for two years or as long as mutually desired by mother and infant. Exclusively breastfeeding WIC moms get an enhanced food package, and WIC encourages our health partners to adopt policies and create environments that are supportive of breastfeeding.
WIC wants parents to be informed, confident and comfortable with their infant feeding decisions and to choose the option that best supports their needs and circumstances.
If breastfeeding is not exclusive, WIC can provide both milk-and soy-based formulas for our clients. WIC also maintains a formulary of therapeutic formulas for medical conditions that may be provided with a medical request from a health care professional.

See the Texas WIC Formulary for available therapeutic formulas, which require health partners to fill out a Texas WIC Medical Request for Therapeutic formula. WIC approval is required.

Requesting metabolic formulas
Metabolic formula products are available to treat inborn errors of metabolism and metabolic disorders.
Requests for metabolic formulas must come from recognized metabolic centers using the Texas WIC Medical Request for Metabolic Formula/Food.
WIC staff do not counsel or provide education concerning these specialized medical conditions but must approve all metabolic formula requests.
